How the Libraries of Rome are redefining digital access with Hublet

When the Libraries of Rome set out to modernise their digital services, they wanted something that went beyond the traditional computer stations. They envisioned a library where patrons could enjoy flexible, user-friendly, and accessible technology that kept up with the times. That’s where Hublet Solution came in, revolutionising the way their visitors interact with digital resources.

The Challenge: Stuck in One Spot

Before Hublet, library users had to rely on stationary desktop computers. While effective, these setups had their downsides:

  • Limited Mobility: Desktops tied users to specific areas, making the library experience less dynamic.
  • Accessibility Gaps: Many patrons, especially those without internet at home, depended heavily on library resources, but the limited options weren’t always ideal.
  • High Maintenance Costs: Broken keyboards, faulty monitors, and outdated hardware meant constant repairs and rising expenses.

Clearly, it was time for an upgrade.

The Solution: Enter Hublet

The Libraries of Rome introduced Hublet Solution, a self-service tablet lending system that turned the game around. Patrons now borrow tablets independently, scanning their library cards or even barcodes on their phones.

With Hublet, the libraries brought in a solution that was:

  • Mobile: Patrons could use tablets anywhere in the library—cosy reading nooks, café corners, or outdoor seating.
  • Customisable: User profiles tailored the experience for kids and adults, ensuring appropriate access for all.
  • Efficient: Tablets require far less upkeep than traditional computers and consume less energy.

Why Patrons Love It

"Tablets make everything much easier," says Marialaura Staniscia, who oversees public services at the Guglielmo Marconi Library. "Access is much faster, and getting online is quicker."

The freedom to move around the library while staying connected has been a game-changer. Patrons can browse the internet, use study apps, or read eBooks wherever they feel most comfortable.

One patron, Ronny, shared: "I love using the tablets to read newspapers online. It feels like a modern twist on an old tradition. You have access to newspapers and magazines every day, and it’s incredibly convenient."

Behind the Scenes: The Library’s Perspective

For the staff, Hublet didn’t just simplify tablet lending—it made managing multiple locations a breeze. With the Hublet Manager, everything is centralised:

  • Apps can be distributed to every library location with just a few clicks.
  • Tablets are prepped and ready for specific services without complicated setup.
  • Privacy is a top priority, with automatic data wiping after each session.

"We can manage all devices from one place, and any changes we make are reflected across all our libraries," explains Alessio Fontana, Systems Administrator in ICT for the Libraries of Rome.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Since rolling out Hublet in 10 branches, the response has been overwhelmingly positive:

  • Tablet Usage Is Booming: Patrons love the self-service model and flexibility.
  • Operational Efficiency Is Up: Staff spend less time troubleshooting, freeing them to focus on other tasks.
  • User Privacy Handled: Tablets erase data after every use—peace of mind for everyone involved.
  • Self-disinfecting: Tablets are simple to clean, their Fotonit coating kills 99% of bacteria with normal light.

With such success, the Libraries of Rome plan to expand Hublet Solution to even more branches. They’re also exploring creative uses for Hublet Profiles, such as parental controls for teenagers, ensuring the service continues to grow alongside their patrons’ needs.

A Modern Library for a Modern Audience

By adopting Hublet Solution, the Libraries of Rome have positioned themselves as leaders in digital inclusion and user-focused innovation. They’ve created a library experience that’s flexible, efficient, and welcoming for all.

As Marialaura Staniscia puts it: "The experience has been positive, and we would definitely recommend Hublet to others. It’s versatile, easy to use, and appeals to younger audiences—adding real value to what we offer."
