Flexible Digital Resources in Ernst-Abbe Library
The Ernst-Abbe Library (EAB) at Engelplatz in Jena, Germany, has enhanced user experience by introducing a self-service tablet solution into its two locations: the new building in the city centre and the branch library in the Lobeda district.
With the self-service Hublet Dock station in the magazine lounge near the entrance, the library provides easy access to digital content, complementing the library's existing print magazines, newspapers, and games and making digital resources as readily available as traditional media. “With the Hublet Tablets, we want to make access to our digital offerings easier and simplify internet usage,” comments Katja Müller, Director of Ernst-Abbe Library.
In addition to enhancing access to the library's digital resources through apps like PressReader or the Thüringer Online Library (ThueBIBNet), the library uses Hublet Tablets featuring interactive activities on-site, with plans to expand their use for educational purposes.
“In the future, we plan to use the tablets for activities with school classes. Our tablet treasure hunts, which playfully teach how to search the online catalog, are already well-known. With the Hublets, we can certainly organize other educational activities even better."
- Kathleen Paetznick, System Administrator and Media Education Specialist.
Another Hublet Dock can be found at the Lobeda branch library, situated beside the PC workstations that mainly serve people who simply need the internet to research, read eBooks, or stream videos. This gives them more freedom than PCs, leaving the dedicated computer workstations available for more intensive tasks.
